Penny is a Collaborative Divorce attorney and mediates for various family law and guardianship matters. She specializes in family, juvenile and guardianship law. Penny received her Juris Doctorate from Drake University Law School in 2007 and was admitted to the Iowa State Bar the same year. At Drake, Penny served on the Student Bar Association and was elected President her final year of school. Penny was awarded the Martin Tollefson Award by her class in recognition of her leadership and service to the law school. She also was selected by the law school faculty to receive the Ferguson Prize Gold Award, which recognizes a student who exemplifies commitment to public service, and rendered outstanding services at the Law School Clinic or towards other public service endeavors.
Prior to attending law school, Penny earned her B.A. from Central College (Pella) in 2000. After graduating Penny worked at the Hispanic Educational Resource Center (formerly HER) in Des Moines helping families connect to community services and performing developmental screenings for children in their program. Following law school Penny served as Executive Director of The HOLA Center, connecting Spanish speakers to local community social and legal services, giving legal advice to low-income families and creating community awareness as to legal rights and responsibilities. Penny is passionate about the well-being and best interests of children, and how they are impacted in every area of legal process. She represents children in juvenile court and minor guardianship proceedings. After several years of trial litigation, Penny found her strengths lie in Collaborative and Mediation practices where families can better direct the outcomes that will affect their children and families. She values civil discourse through alternative dispute resolution and is an experienced mediator.
Penny is a current member of the Polk and Iowa State Bar Associations, and is on the leadership team for the Central Iowa Academy Of Collaborative Professionals (CIACP).
Fun Facts: Penny grew up as an Air Force brat, having lived in England and Hawaii due to her family’s assignments prior to settling back in her family’s State of Origin, Iowa. Penny is active at her church, enjoys traveling, participating in mission trips, reading, drinking craft beer, running/cycling/hiking, and being outdoors.
